The GCSE English Equivalency exam is based on the AQA English Language specification - however with a few slight modifications in order to make the exam more accessible for those who have been out of education for a while.

The GCSE English Equivalency exam consists of 2 papers : a reading and a writing paper. On the exam day, you will have 2 hours and 10 minutes for the exam and is marked altogether out of 100, which decides your grade as a percentage with corresponding grades 1-9. Most providers require a minimum of a level 4 (grade C), sometimes they may require higher so be sure to check!

Just as an idea, the grade boundaries are as follows:

Level 9    79-100    79%

Level 8    73-78      73%

Level 7    68-72      68%

Level 6    61-67      61%

Level 5    54-60      54%

Level 4  48-53      48%

Level 3  35-47      35%

Level 2  23-34      23%

Level 1 10-22      10%

Unclassified  0-9  0%

So on the exam day all you will need is : a computer/laptop with a webcam & strong internet access, pen & lined paper, ID and your smartphone in order to submit your answers if you write your answers on the paper.

On the exam day, you will be sent a zoom link to ensure that you are monitored properly by your invigilator. Your first paper is Section A which is the reading section (you will have 1 hour and 25 minutes to complete this section and is worth 60 marks). Then you will sit your second paper straight after. The second paper is Section B which is the writing section (you will have 45 minutes to complete this section and this is worth 40 marks).
